Vignals

A little further on, to the right of the large oak tree, is VIGNALS, our most difficult vineyard to control because the soil is very fertile. We have not used any chemical weedkillers in our vines for many years, which does not make the task easy. We limit tillage to intervine spaces (under the row) and alternate green fertilizers (beans, field beans, radishes, etc.) and natural flora, every other row. Prevention is more important than treatment and any experienced gardener will tell you that there are certain periods when it is more appropriate to do certain things like planting, pruning etc. All our activities are therefore very linked to the calendar.

Continue along the road and you will see on your left the river, the Lot, which flows towards Fumel and a little further on the village of Soturac. If you turn left here you will arrive on the banks of the Lot (it takes 15 minutes of walking to go down but at least 30 minutes and a few drops of sweat to go back up). You cross the remains of the ancient town of Orgueil which belonged to the English during the Hundred Years' War. Orgueil at this time was as large as Cahors but was completely destroyed when the French took it back. "la combe de gaby" on the slope facing the Lot, a large plot of 8 hectares in one piece was recently acquired (er...updated...25 years ago...).

If you are a good walker, you can walk around it and you will realize the exceptional length of the rows of vines. Spare a little thought for winter pruning … This plot is very steep, so much so that a violent storm has already happened to carry the earth from above to the bottom of the slope, going so far as to completely cover the vines! The rows are planted perpendicular to the slope to prevent runoff water from carrying the soil. In addition, grassing the rows also helps to avoid mudslides!
